If I stay, by Gayle
Forman, is a very emotional book that makes you think a lot. It is a mix of
Fantasy and Tragedy book.
Mia's life and dreams
of becoming a famous cello are crushed by one car ride which went wrong. Mia
and her family were heading to one of their close friends house when it
happened. Mia's family's car hits into another, leaving a tragic ending. Mia is
thrown out of the car. Scared, cold and confused she is standing on the side of
the road. She starts walking around, finding her parents dead. After walking
around a little bit, she thinks she found Teddy, lying on the side of the road
but when she gets closer she realizes that it’s her. Before Mia can even move,
she hears sirens. Her body is being rushed to the hospital and she follows to
see what will happen, forgetting about her brother. Later on, in the hospital,
she hears that he was also taken to a hospital, but to a different one. She
meets her boyfriend and her best friend in the hospital, but they can’t see her
since her body is in the hospital bedroom. She also meet Willow, the friend
they were going to visit, when she notices that her brother is also dead. She
starts wondering if there was anything left living for. Because she doubts so
much, she dies on the operating table, but then somehow comes back. Her friends
and grand parents visit her many times. Then she has to make the decision
whether she wants to live or to die.
I enjoyed reading this
book, even though it was very sad. I would recommend it to readers of the age
of 10 years or above, since it is pretty sad. If you don’t like crying while
reading a book, I don’t think you should read If I stay. I think Death is a
hard thing to write about because not many people might want to read it, but
Gayle Forman did a great job.
